Purpose
The scholarship supports advancement of the mineral industries by providing educational assistance in the arts and sciences related to those fields. Its principal aim is to help deserving graduate students in mining, metallurgical, and petroleum-related programs at colleges and universities that grant degrees in mineral engineering.

Award details
- Two scholarships of approximately $2,000 each are awarded annually (final amounts depend on fund performance).
- An additional $500 travel reimbursement is available to each recipient to enable them to personally accept the award at the TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition. Recipients must attend the conference to receive this travel reimbursement.
- Awardees will be designated Henry deWitt Smith Scholars and will receive a brochure describing Mr. Smith and his connection to the mining industry.
- Funding for this scholarship is provided by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME).

Eligibility requirements
- Must be a student member of Material Advantage and/or the TMS Graduate Student Program.
- Must be a full-time graduate student currently enrolled in a metallurgical, materials science, or materials engineering program at a qualified college or university.
- A cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 is required.
- Coursework submitted as part of the application must be relevant to the scholarship’s focus.
- Relatives of members of the funding committee/division are ineligible.

How to apply
Submission deadline: March 15 each year. Applications must be submitted online; paper or e-mailed materials will not be accepted. To complete your application, upload the following items:
1. Completed application form.
2. A personal statement (maximum 200 words, double-spaced) outlining distinctive educational experiences (for example, special projects), career objectives, leadership roles, involvement in a Material Advantage chapter, and community service.
3. Curriculum vitae or résumé.
4. An up-to-date academic transcript.
5. Three references/testimonials from instructors, supervisors, or employers familiar with your qualifications.

Additional notes
- An applicant may apply to up to two TMS-sponsored scholarships in a given year, but TMS will award no more than one scholarship to any individual per year. If selected for multiple awards, the recipient will receive the single scholarship with the greatest monetary value.
