Introduction
Established in 1979, the Polish Heritage Club of Wisconsin–Madison (PHCWI) exists to celebrate and preserve the legacy of Polish forebears through activities that are educational, cultural, charitable, and social in nature. The Club advances this mission by:
- Fostering interest in and knowledge of both Polish and American cultural traditions, especially among Americans of Polish descent.
- Organizing social and civic events that maintain the distinctiveness, value, and enjoyment of Polish customs while highlighting their harmony with American history.
- Hosting and welcoming artists, scholars, dignitaries, writers, musicians, and others who promote Polish-American culture in Wisconsin.
- Encouraging goodwill, understanding, and unity among Americans of diverse ethnic backgrounds.
- Supporting academic study and public education about Polish heritage.
- Donating to charitable causes.
Scholarship Purpose
The PHCWI offers one or more scholarships to help cover tuition costs for students pursuing post-secondary education.
Application Review and Award Process
The PHCWI Scholarship Committee evaluates submitted application materials to confirm that applicants meet the published criteria. The Committee then nominates its chosen candidate(s) to the Board of Directors (BOD). Scholarship funds are disbursed after verification that the recipient has completed one semester of the upcoming academic year. Decisions made by the Scholarship Committee and the BOD are final.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following to be considered:
1. Be of Polish ancestry, or be studying Polish language, history, society or culture, or be demonstrably and significantly involved with Polish culture.
2. Be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident.
3. Be a Wisconsin resident (evidenced by a Wisconsin mailing address or graduation from a Wisconsin high school).
4. Be enrolled in or planning to enroll in an accredited U.S. college or university program leading to an associate, bachelor’s, or graduate degree.
5. Have a strong academic record; successful applicants generally have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
6. Not have previously received a PHCWI scholarship.
The Scholarship Committee will verify that applicants fulfill these requirements as part of the review process.
