Overview
State Grants provide financial assistance to Minnesota students from low- and moderate-income households to help cover college costs at qualifying Minnesota institutions.

Who is eligible
- Minnesota residents who are either high school graduates (or hold an equivalent credential) or are at least 17 years old.
- Undergraduates enrolled for a minimum of three credits at one of more than 130 eligible Minnesota colleges or universities.

Who is not eligible
- Applicants who are in default on a federal student loan or who are more than 30 days delinquent on child support owed to a public agency are ineligible unless they have arranged a repayment plan with the appropriate agency and have made a series of timely monthly payments. More information about restoring financial aid eligibility after a federal student loan default is available from the state financial aid office.

Enrollment and yearly limits
- In a single fiscal year a student may receive State Grant funding for up to four consecutive full-time quarters or three consecutive semesters.
- Overall eligibility is limited to the equivalent of eight full-time semesters (or twelve quarters). Students who withdrew to enter active military service or who left because of a major medical illness while under a physician’s care after December 31, 2002, may receive one additional term of eligibility.
- State Grants are available only to students who have not already earned a baccalaureate degree.
- Students must reapply annually. Grants may be renewed up to the eight-semester / twelve-quarter limit provided the student continues to make satisfactory academic progress and demonstrates financial need as defined by state law.

Eligible institutions and restrictions
- Grants may be used at qualifying Minnesota institutions, including state universities, the University of Minnesota, public community and technical colleges, nursing and allied health schools, private colleges, and private career schools located in Minnesota. There are more than 130 eligible schools in the state.
- State Grant funds cannot be used at out-of-state institutions. However, Minnesota participates in tuition reciprocity agreements with several other states and one Canadian province that may lower tuition costs for some students.
