SNAME Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers
Introduction
SNAME awards competitive scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students studying naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, or other disciplines directly connected to the maritime sector. In addition, SNAME provides grants to student members through its Student Grant Program. Students with strong academic records are encouraged to apply.
Who is Eligible
- Open to applicants worldwide who are active SNAME members and who intend to continue membership.
- For undergraduate awards: candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate program for the academic year of the award and must not have completed their bachelor’s degree before 15 April of that year.
- Undergraduate scholarships are intended for study leading to a Bachelor of Science in naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, or other fields closely related to the marine industry.
- Each undergraduate scholarship may be received only once by the same individual; recipients remain eligible to apply for graduate-level SNAME scholarships.
- Note: The Sheri and Anil Raj Scholarship accepts either undergraduate or graduate students attending any accredited university in the United States.
SNAME Membership Requirement
- Applicants must hold active SNAME membership. Membership must have been in effect for at least four months before the application submission deadline (for example, join by 1 February for the current cycle). Applicants should be actively involved in SNAME and committed to future participation.
Deadlines and Submission Timing
- Submit the scholarship application by 1 June.
- All supporting documentation must be received no later than 15 June to be considered.
Required Documents and Information
- Official or unofficial transcript showing academic performance, including GPA and/or class standing (please indicate class size and your rank if available).
- A 500–600 word supporting essay describing your interest in naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, or other marine-related fields, and detailing your professionalism, commitment, and past or ongoing involvement with SNAME.
- Any additional requested materials per the online application form.
Selection Process and Timing
- The Scholarships Committee reviews applications and makes recommendations; final awards are approved by the SNAME Executive Committee. Selection occurs in July.
Use of Award Funds
- Scholarship money may be applied toward tuition, textbooks, academic fees, and other education-related expenses for study and research.
Award Amounts
- Mandell and Lester Rosenblatt Scholarship and the Robert N. and Helen H. Herbert Scholarship: up to $6,000 for one year of full‑time study.
- Other SNAME undergraduate scholarships: up to $5,000 for one year of study.

Formatting and Character Guidance
- Avoid using non‑English special characters in form fields; substitute common English alphabet equivalents for unique letters.
